Psycho-educational assessment

is a process used by a clinical psychologist or

neuropsychologist to:

  • Assess your child’s cognitive functioning, academic functioning,

      and social/emotional functioning

  • Understand how your child approaches learning and development

  • Identify your child's strengths and any areas where they may be struggling or require help

  • Understand any behavioral problems or areas of concern

The assessment typically consists of psychometric testing (using tools such as the Wechsler Scales and Wechsler Individual Achievement Scales), neuro-psychological assessment, and behavioural and emotional assessment of your child, as well as interviews with parents / guardians and your child’s teachers and/or school principal. The testing and assessment components of the evaluation undertaken by your child generally take approximately three (3) hours to complete and are usually administered over two sessions.

Once the assessment is completed, a feedback session occurs with the parent(s)/guardian(s). This is a critical aspect of the assessment. It provides you with an opportunity to hear your child’s assessment results and to ask any questions that you may have.  You'll also receive a written report summarising your child’s assessment results and containing specific recommendations to be implemented in collaboration with your child’s school.

There may also be a feedback session for your child, depending upon their age. By the time children are in middle school they are often curious regarding their performance.
