Looking For a Child ADHD Assessment in Sydney?

ADHD is a condition characterised by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. At The Balmain Practice, we understand the importance of finding the right support when seeking an ADHD assessment in Sydney. Our caring and experienced team offers thorough and specialised ADHD testing. We aim to ensure each child receives the best care and attention they deserve.

Our five-step assessment process allows us to tailor our approach to each child's needs. We begin with an intake call to fully understand the child's history and symptoms.

The next step involves scheduling an online clinical interview with parents to better understand your child's behaviours, emotions, and overall functioning in a supportive and detailed way. The insights gathered during this interview are important for conducting thorough psychometric evaluations and assessments tailored to your child's needs. Understanding your child’s history helps us build a clear picture, ensuring we provide the most effective and personalised support possible.

Once the assessment is complete, our experienced team analyses the results, which can lead to a diagnosis and/or a better understanding of how your child learns best. We then prepare a detailed report outlining all of our findings and tailored recommendations. We then hold a feedback session to walk you through the results, answer any questions, and discuss the best next steps. This thorough process is designed to provide clarity, support, and a holistic approach, ensuring the best possible outcome for your child.

What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects a child's ability to focus, regulate impulses, manage their energy and organise themselves in school and at home. Children with ADHD may:

  • Struggle to stay focused in class

  • Become very distractible to others and distracted

  • Find it hard to remain seated or wait for their turn

  • Act impulsively in social or academic settings

  • Shows inconsistent academic performance or incomplete tasks

  • Display restlessness, often fidgeting or moving constantly

  • Face challenges in planning or time management

Every child experiences ADHD differently. Some might primarily struggle with inattentiveness, while others might display hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. This is why a comprehensive child ADHD assessment in Sydney is important to understand your child's needs.

Why is an ADHD Assessment Important?

ADHD assessments play an essential role in identifying ADHD or other potential challenges related to executive function, early on. By recognising these symptoms early, timely interventions can be made that address the child's learning needs, promote their well-being, and provide the support they deserve to thrive. Whilst early intervention is optimal, TBP assesses many children at all stages of their education. It is never too late to assist your child academically.  A thorough assessment provides clarity, allowing tailored strategies that help:

  • Support academic potential by addressing specific learning needs

  • Encourage social confidence through tailored guidance and support

  • Develop emotional regulation and self-management skills to navigate challenges effectively

  • Lay the foundation for  long-term learning success by empowering your child with tools to thrive

Our ADHD Assessment Process Explained

Our ADHD assessment process is designed to be thorough, supportive, and straightforward, ensuring your child feels at ease at every step. Here's how the process works:

Psychologist during an interview with a parent concerned their child has ADHD

STEP 1: INITIAL INTAKE CALL

Our process begins with a detailed intake call with our Client Concierge, Candy Elliot. Candy holds a psychotherapy diploma and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in psychotherapy. During this call, she will discuss your concerns, answer questions, and determine whether an ADHD assessment is the best next step. If it is, Candy will make an appointment for your assessment with one of our psychologists. Candy will provide clear, compassionate guidance throughout the entire process.

STEP 2: CLINICAL PARENT INTERVIEW

A one-on-one, in-depth online interview is conducted with one of our experienced psychologists. This interview helps us build a complete picture of your child's developmental and behavioural history. During this session, we will:

  • Explore your child's current behaviours in school and at home, emotional well-being, and any challenges they may face.

  • Discuss developmental milestones, family background (including the mother’s pregnancy), social skills, hobbies, interests, and your child’s overall physical and mental health.

  • Review any existing reports from schools or medical professionals.

  • Identify academic difficulties or learning struggles your child may have.

  • Address any specific questions or concerns about the process.

This step lets us gain valuable insights into your child's unique profile.

STEP 3: CHILD TESTING AND ASSESSMENTS

The core of the assessment process involves focused testing sessions tailored to your child's needs. These assessments include:

  • Cognitive Ability Testing: This includes assessments of verbal comprehension, fluid reasoning, visual-spatial reasoning, working memory, and processing speed.

  • Executive Function Testing: Measures abilities such as impulse control, planning, attention and concentration and cognitive flexibility.

  • Academic Performance Assessment: Assesses skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.

  • Social and Emotional Questionnaires: Examines emotional patterns, social skills, and behaviour across different settings.

Parents, teachers, or caregivers (when applicable) will also be asked to complete screening tools to provide additional context about the child's focus and behaviour. These perspectives help us build a more complete understanding of your child.

STEP 4: ANALYSIS AND WRITTEN REPORT

Once the assessments are complete, our professional psychologist will carefully review all results to identify patterns and traits consistent with ADHD or specific learning disorders such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia. This analysis integrates data from testing, parental input, and additional reports.

We then prepare a clear, easy-to-understand report that outlines:

  • Key findings based on the assessment results.

  • Personalised recommendations for academic support, emotional well-being, and therapeutic interventions.

  • Suggestions for lifestyle adjustments or accommodations to help your child thrive.

This report is a practical guide addressing the child's unique challenges and strengths.

Finally, a detailed online feedback session is conducted to discuss the results. The psychologist will explain the findings in detail, answer any questions, and clarify the next steps. An electronic copy of the comprehensive report will also be provided, and a printed version can be mailed after the session if requested.

Your Next Step Towards Clarity and Growth

Understanding ADHD means recognising that neurodivergent brains function differently in structure, connectivity, and processing. These natural variations reflect how individuals experience and interact with the world. For children, these differences can bring about challenges like anxiety or stress in certain situations. However, ADHD has remarkable strengths too, such as creativity, innovation, hyperfocus, unique problem-solving skills, and the ability to inspire those around them.

With the correct diagnosis and support, children with ADHD can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. If you're concerned your child may have ADHD, you don't have to face it alone. We're here to guide you. Contact us today to schedule your child's ADHD assessment in Sydney and take the first step towards unlocking their full potential.
