Understanding Depression

We all experience low moods from time to time and some days where everything feels a little harder. But depression is more than just feeling sad or flat. It is a deep and persistent sense of emptiness, heaviness, or disconnection that can make even simple tasks feel overwhelming.

Depression can quietly take hold, often leaving you wondering where your energy, motivation, or joy have gone. You might still be functioning on the outside, showing up to work, caring for others, but inside, you feel numb, stuck, or distant from the person you used to be.

If this sounds familiar, please know that you’re not alone and that recovery is possible with the right support.

Common Symptoms of Depression

Depression can look and feel different for everyone, but common signs include:

Emotional symptoms:
•    Persistent sadness, emptiness, or tearfulness
•    Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
•    Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, or worthlessness
•    Irritability or frustration, even over small things

Physical symptoms:
•    Changes in sleep, sleeping too much or too little
•    Fatigue or lack of energy
•    Changes in appetite or weight
•    Slowed thinking, movement, or speech

Cognitive and behavioural symptoms:
•    Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
•    Withdrawing from social contact
•    Neglecting self-care or responsibilities
•    Thoughts that life isn’t worth living

Depression can affect every part of your life, work, relationships, and your sense of self. But it doesn’t have to define you or your future.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy offers a compassionate and non-judgmental space to explore what’s happening beneath the surface. Together, we can understand the roots of your depression, identify the patterns that keep you feeling stuck, and find ways to move toward hope and connection again.

Treatment is always tailored to your unique situation, but may include approaches such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Helps you recognise and challenge unhelpful thought patterns and develop more balanced, empowering ways of thinking.

  • Schema Therapy
Explores deeper emotional wounds and unmet needs that may be contributing to persistent sadness or self-criticism.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Focuses on living a values-based life — even in the presence of difficult emotions.

  • Mindfulness and Self-Compassion Techniques
Support emotional regulation and help you reconnect with yourself in a kinder, more accepting way.

Therapy isn’t about “fixing” you, it’s about helping you rediscover your strength, resilience, and sense of meaning.

You Deserve to Feel Better
