Adult ADHD Assessment in Sydney
ADHD can affect people of all ages, including adults. Many adults go years without understanding why certain aspects of daily life feel harder than they should. Difficulty concentrating at work, trouble managing time, persistent restlessness, or a sense of underachievement can all be signs of undiagnosed ADHD.
At the Balmain Practice, we provide comprehensive and evidence-based adult ADHD assessments in Sydney. We understand that ADHD can greatly impact an individual’s personal and professional life, and our goal is to help adults better understand their condition and receive appropriate support.
Our warm, understanding team of registered psychologists takes a collaborative approach to every assessment. From the first phone call through to your feedback session, we are here to support you every step of the way.
Understanding ADHD in Adults
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects focus, impulse control, and the ability to manage daily tasks. ADHD does not only affect children; many adults live with ADHD without ever receiving a formal assessment, often attributing their difficulties to stress, personality, or simply “the way they are.”
As a result, they may spend years struggling with difficulties that can affect their professional performance, relationships, and overall quality of life. Recognising that these challenges may be linked to ADHD can be an important first step toward understanding them and seeking appropriate support.
Signs of ADHD
ADHD can affect adults in different ways. Some people have mainly inattentive symptoms, while others have more hyperactive or impulsive symptoms. Many experience a combination of both.
Common signs that may indicate ADHD in adults include:

Frequently losing focus during conversations or while reading
Starting multiple projects but struggling to finish them
Making careless errors in work despite effort
Avoiding tasks that require sustained mental effort
Acting impulsively without considering the consequences
Difficulty sitting through meetings or other situations that require staying still
Trouble organising tasks, paperwork, or daily routines
These signs are not a reflection of intelligence or ability. They are linked to differences in how the brain regulates attention and executive functions.
ADHD and Co-Occurring Conditions
ADHD commonly occurs alongside other conditions, which can make it harder to identify and understand without a thorough assessment.
Adults seeking ADHD assessments may also be experiencing:
-
Anxiety disorders, persistent worry, physical tension, or difficulty managing uncertainty
-
Depression, low mood, reduced motivation, or a sense of hopelessness
-
Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), including dyslexia (reading difficulties), dysgraphia (writing difficulties), or dyscalculia (difficulties with maths)
-
Autism, which can often co-occur with ADHD

At Balmain Practice, our comprehensive ADHD assessments consider your symptoms, personal history, and how they affect your daily life. We also look for other conditions that may be present alongside ADHD, helping us provide more accurate and personalised recommendations.
Benefits of an Adult ADHD Assessment
An ADHD assessment can help you understand why you may be experiencing certain difficulties and whether ADHD could be contributing to them. It can also help identify the support that may be appropriate for you.
The benefits of a professional adult ADHD assessment include:
-
Clarity: Understanding the reasons behind ongoing difficulties
-
Accurate identification: Distinguishing ADHD from other conditions that may present similarly
-
Personalised recommendations: Practical strategies tailored to your specific profile and challenges
-
Next steps: Having a clearer basis for deciding what support may be appropriate
Our Adult ADHD Assessment Process
At The Balmain Practice, our adult ADHD assessment process is structured and comprehensive, with each stage helping us build a clear understanding of your symptoms and individual needs. Here’s what to expect at each stage.

STEP 1: INITIAL INTAKE CALL

The process begins with an intake call with our Client Concierge, Candy Elliot. Candy holds a Diploma in Psychotherapy and a Bachelor of Psychotherapy. During the call, Candy will discuss your concerns, answer any questions you may have, and explain what to expect from the assessment process. If an assessment is suitable, she will arrange an appointment with one of our psychologists at a time that suits you.

STEP 2: ONLINE CLINICAL INTERVIEW
The second step is a one-on-one clinical interview with one of our psychologists. During this session, you will have the opportunity to discuss your personal history, behavioural patterns, and any difficulties affecting your everyday life at home, at work, or in social settings.
The interview may cover areas such as:
Important life experiences and family dynamics
Professional and social relationships
Mental and physical health
Personal interests, strengths, and achievements

STEP 3: COMPREHENSIVE PSYCHOMETRIC TESTING
The third step involves a range of psychometric assessments designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of your cognitive abilities, emotional resilience, and overall psychological well-being.
These evidence-based assessments help explore different areas of functioning and provide valuable insight into your individual strengths, challenges, and needs.
PSYCHOMETRIC TESTING

STEP 4: COMPREHENSIVE REPORT AND ANALYSIS
Once testing is complete, your psychologist carefully reviews and analyses all the data gathered across the interview and assessment sessions. This analysis identifies patterns and traits that may be consistent with ADHD or other contributing conditions.
We then prepare a comprehensive written report that includes:
-
A detailed explanation of the assessment findings
-
A diagnosis (if applicable)
-
Personalised recommendations for managing challenges in daily life and at work
-
Suggestions for further support
The report is written to be clear and practical. It serves as a useful document for other health professionals involved in your care.

STEP 5: FEEDBACK AND GUIDANCE SESSION

Finally, your psychologist organises an online feedback session to review and discuss the results of your assessment. Your psychologist will explain the findings clearly, answer any questions you may have, and discuss any concerns you may have.
The session allows time for a collaborative discussion so you can understand the results and what they mean for you. Following the session, we will provide an electronic copy of your assessment report for your records or to share with your GP and other health professionals.
